Teeth Whitening Utah

What is Zoom Whitening?

Zoom whitening is a teeth whitening process used in many areas across the world. It effectively lightens discoloration of dentin and enamel. There are many reasons for tooth discoloration, the most common being from drinking coffee and tea, or smoking. Over time the aging process can darken your teeth.

How does it work?

The procedure is done in office and uses an advanced lamp that acclerates the bleaching process. The lamp activates the hydrogen peroxide whitening agent, breaks down and enters the enamel and dentin. It effectively bleaches out the stained teeth, without changing the structure of the them.

Before your treatment

Dr. Brown will do a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums. He'll also discuss your oral hygiene and eating habits to determine whether you'll benefit from Zoom whitening. It is important to talk to Dr. Brown if you are planning having other cosmetic dental procedures. Procedures such as veneers, braces and composite bonding are considered into the decision in order to ensure the match in whiteness between the restoration and your natural teeth.

The whitening procedure

The procedure lasts around an hour. It's recommend that you have a teeth cleaning prior to your Zoom whitening session. The procedure begins by preparing a cover for your lips and gums which in turn leaves your teeth exposed. The zoom whitening gel is then applied for fifteen minutes while the Zoom light activates it. While this is happening you are welcome to sit back and relax or watch TV. There is a total of 45 minutes of treatment time with three 15-minute sessions of light activation. To reduce tooth sensitivity a flouride paste-gel is applied to the teeth immediately following the procedure.

Maintenance after the procedure:

You get a Zoom touch-up kit to take home that includes custom fitted whitening trays. You’ll want to follow Dr. Brown’s instructions for how and when to use it. Keep in mind that certain foods and beverages should be avoided that will stain your teeth including coffee, tea, wine and colas. Tabacco products also stain teeth and Dr. Brown always recommends that you avoid using them. Regularly scheduled teeth cleanings along with brushing and flossing is the best way to prevent stains from reforming.

Things to consider

Occasionally we have some patients that experience tooth sensitivity during the treatment. The Zoom light produces minimum heat which is most often times the reason for the sensitivity. In rare instances our patients experience some minor tingling but goes away quickly. Dr. Brown is happy to provide you with special toothpaste to reduce tooth sensitivity.
